The Virginia S. Baker Recreation Fund

In 1904, Miss Ginny, as the neighborhood children called her, was just 19 years old. She worked for the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Office of Adventures in Fun from then until 1944 when, after 54 years, she retired. An inspiration to us all, Miss Ginny created such events as the Preakness Frog Hop, the Chesapeake Turtle Derby, the Fishing Derby, the Annual Doll Show, Hog Calling, and Chicken Clucking Contests. At the time of her death in 1988, Miss Baker’s family started the Virginia S. Baker Memorial Recreation Fund in her honor. This fund, managed by the Friends of Patterson Park, supports family oriented, unique, zany, and fun events in Patterson Park. Contributions from the Virginia Baker Fund have recently supported a water ballet show, the Halloween Lantern Parade, and the July 3rd picnic. Businesses and individuals continue to contribute to this fund in honor of Miss Ginny and to support events that bring her spirit of fun to the Patterson Park Community.

Tax deductible donations to the Virginia S. Baker Fund are gladly accepted.
