Recent Accomplishments
of the Friends of Patterson Park
New
Events in Patterson Park - Working with our community partners,
Creative Alliance, Patterson Park CDC, Lateral Stress Velo Cycling Club,
and Banner Neighborhoods, the Friends were able to bring great new events
to Patterson Park like BikeJam and the Great Lantern Parade.
Flag
Pole Project - the 100’ flagpole that was struck by lightening
has been replaced. The new flagpole is west of the Pagoda near South Patterson
Park Avenue and Lombard Street. The flag can be seen from Fort McHenry.
Latrobe Fountain Restoration - A grant for $100,000 was
made possible for the restoration of this beautiful marble fountain located
at the Lombard Street entrance. Design work for this project will begin
in the spring of 2002.
Plan
For A Trash-free Park - The Friends worked with Baltimore City
on a plan that was launched in January 2002. The plan established a regular
trash removal truck route in order to eliminate turf damage, as well as
the purchase of 80 new “I Love Patterson Park” trash cans.
The plan was sponsored by members of the Friends of Patterson Park, Banner
Neighborhoods, and the Baltimore Sport and Social Club.
Pulaski
Monument Re-dedication - A complete restoration was completed
and a re-dedication was held in October 2001. There was a parade and ceremonies
to honor this event.
Tree
Planting - Through a partnership with the Fine Arts Gallery of
UMBC, the Friends have acquired 130 new trees over the past year. More
than 300 volunteers helped to plant the trees and continue to mulch and
water throughout the year.
