The new playground opened in the Spring of 2005. Three years in the making, the new playground is the result of a successful partnership -- both in designing and funding the project -- between the Friends of Patterson Park and the Department of Parks and Recreation. Dedicated Friends volunteers raised $30,000 through grants, fundraisers and gifts from generous park patrons.

Bensky Inc., the city’s chosen contractor, began work on the project by grading a large area, which has become a 5-foot wall built into the side of a hill. The slides and climbing equipment connect into the wall making them handicap accessible. The incorporation of elements representing an ‘Old Baltimore’ theme – like rowhouse facades, a Bromo-Seltzer clock tower and a gazebo reminiscent of the Music Pavilion, one of Patterson Park’s lost landmark – make it like no other playground in the city.

Situated under large shade trees atop a hill along Eastern Avenue between Milton and Montford Avenues, the playground replaces the current one near Gough Street. The fenced area includes separate play spaces for toddlers and older children plus an open area for running or tossing a ball.
