Topography

The topography of Patterson Park may be its single most character-defining feature. The highest elevations are located at the Lombard Street gateway and the Pagoda. Here one experiences a sweeping view of the park with the harbor in the distance.

The western side of the park gently slopes to the southeast, providing a picturesque setting for pathways, carriageways and the Boat Lake. One hundred feet below the elevation of the Pagoda are the playing fields, a relatively flat and well suited area for such activities. The bowl of the eastern annex, which is located 15 feet above Linwood Avenue, is elegantly enclosed by the slopes rising to Ellwood Avenue. While standing atop this slope looking westward, one is treated to a sweeping view of the park.
