OUR PARK’S WEALTH OF TREES AND BIRDS

Can you imagine our wonderful Park without its cooling shade trees and the chorus of birdsong? Fortunately, early planners pictured Patterson Park as an urban oasis, offering a country-like setting for year-round enjoyment.

They created curving paths, grassy meadows, and graceful buildings here and there. They added a large lake, a pond and refreshing fountains. And, over many years, they planted hundreds of trees, both native and exotic, throughout the Park.

There are now nearly 1,000 trees in Patterson Park, representing more than 50 different species. Besides mature shade trees, there are several that treat us to seasonal beauty: scented white magnolias, pink crabapple and delicate cherry blossoms in spring; fiery maples and golden oaks in fall.

With such a varied and inviting atmosphere, Patterson Park provides a haven for nearly 50 bird species. Many live and breed here year-round; others visit during spring and fall migrations. The local Audubon Society chapter has observed and recorded these species.
