What is the Campaign for?

We plan to renovate the historic Patterson Park Superintendent’s House to support our offices and an accessible Visitors’ Center highlighting the park’s history, construct a community space and separate volunteer support center behind the current building, and to add a usable courtyard and other amenities.

 Why is it needed?

The white house - our current headquarters - was built in 1868 as a home for the park superintendent and is owned by Baltimore City Recreation and Parks. It has had no major improvements since the 1970s, and is suffering from a history of deferred maintenance. This limits the facility’s ability to support our work at a time when the demands on the park continue to grow.

Fun examples! The kitchen is not adequate to support our programs. Electricity and plumbing are problematic (half of the house’s outlets and lights do not work or are easily overloaded). The basement floods and has mold. Storage space is inadequate.

We have no covered/conditioned/healthy space to hold events, classes or other gatherings when the weather is bad, which limits our programming.

What can we do with it?

·      Preserve a great piece of Baltimore history and share it with park visitors via a new Visitors’ Center

·      Use courtyard and new conditioned programming space to meet our current and future needs! Indoor yoga, Zumba, educational programs, donor events, classes, workshops, healthy cooking classes…we have many ideas on how to continue fulfilling our mission.

·      We can present a more welcoming face to the communities north/northwest of the park with our new side entrance and open fencing.

·      We can open the new space to outside groups and private rentals.

When will construction begin?

Can’t be too soon for us! But, potentially beginning in fall 2019.

How much will we need to raise, over how long? $1.8 million, over 2 years.

There are naming opportunities!
We have a Volunteer Support Center, Courtyard/Garden, Community Space, Kitchen, Bike Maintenance Station, and other opportunities, along with a creative, park-facing donor wall where we can engrave donor names. 

How can you participate?

  • Make a gift or pledge to support the project!

  • Spread the word! Neighbors, friends, community members…this project will benefit all park users and visitors, and getting the word out about supporting the campaign to make this all happen will help us get there faster!

How will the matching program work?

The Meyerhoff Foundation has generously provided the opportunity to have your gift to the campaign MATCHED, doubling your contribution! Make your annual Friends of Patterson Park membership gift (at an equivalent or greater amount than your most recent gift, or a become a member!), and your campaign contribution will be matched up to $100,000. This program will help to ensure that we can continue to provide the volunteer support, free programs and park care that is our mission while building a new space that will allow us to expand our capacity…so that we can do more to continue to cultivate our park community.
